What is the International Defensive Pistol Association?

From the IDPA Website:

“IDPA is the use of practical equipment including full charge service ammunition to solve simulated real world self-defense scenarios using practical handguns and holsters that are suitable for self-defense use. The main goal is to test the skill and ability of an individual.”

The main goal of IDPA matches is to test the skill and ability of the individual, not your equipment or gamesmanship. All matches are supervised by qualified IDPA Range Safety Officers.

An IDPA match is a series of individual, timed stages that test your ability to draw and shoot a concealed defensive firearm in a realistic scenario. Stages will test your ability to move, shoot, and reload using positions of cover. While the stages are timed, accuracy is more important than speed.

Stages are designed to be fun and challenging for all ages and all skill levels.

New defensive shooters can use IDPA matches to practice with their concealed-carry handgun in a supervised environment. Stages are designed around your “everyday carry” equipment, with classifications for different sizes and styles of handguns.

Experienced shooters will be challenged to improve speed and accuracy as they move through the official IPDA classifications, from Novice to Master. ASC is an official IDPA club and all scores are uploaded to your IDPA profile.

Participants will be required to join IDPA after 3 shooting matches.

IDPA Rules are available on their website: https://www.idpa.com/idpa-match-rules/

IDPA firearm classification rules are very detailed and can seem daunting at first glance. Don’t let that deter you! We can help you with specifics at your first match as long as you have this basic equipment:

  • A Centerfire pistol (revolver or semi-auto)
  • A belt and holster to fit your gun
  • Minimum of 3 magazines or speed-loaders with 2 magazine pouches or speed-loader carriers
  • 150 rounds of ammo
  • Eye and Ear protection

To participate, you must be able to execute:

  • A safe draw
  • A safe one-handed re-holster
  • A safe reload, muzzle pointed downrange
  • A safe clearing of malfunctions, muzzle pointed downrange

Frequently Asked Questions about IDPA

Q: How long does a match usually last?

A: IDPA matches at ASC can run from 4 – 5 hours, depending on the Stage complexity and number of shooters. Bring plenty of water and some light snacks. We encourage all shooters to arrive 30 – 45 minutes early to help with setup, and appreciate help with teardown at the end.

Q: Does IDPA make allowances for Disabled Shooters?

A: Yes. Official IDPA rules cover Permanently Disabled Shooters in section 7 of their rulebook. The Safety Officers at ASC will do their best to accommodate shooters with mobility issues or those who have issues with some shooting positions.

Q: Can I use a rimfire / .22LR handgun for a match?

A: No. IDPA matches are designed for centerfire, defensive handguns. See section 8 of the IDPA Rulebook for specifics on the types of firearms allowed.

Q: Can I use an Appendix Inside the Waistband (AIWB) holster?

A: Yes. The IDPA rules were updated in 2022 to allow for the use of AIWB holsters.
