SAFETY BRIEFING – HP MATCHES WITH E-TARGETS

  1. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. ASC officers and match officials are authorized to disqualify a competitor and ask the disruptive individual to leave the property at their discretion.
  2. There is a porta-potty. Please use it.
  3. There will be no smoking or vaping forward of the West edge of the canopy.
  4. Leave space for people to walk behind the firing line.
  5. Keep conversations away from the firing line during live fire and avoid loud speech.
  6. Anyone can call a cease-fire for any safety issue. If a cease-fire is called:
    1. Each shooter shall relay the cease-fire command loudly to other shooters and insert an Empty Chamber Indicator (ECI) in all rifles.
    2. Wait for instructions from the Range Officer.
  7. Rifles shall be pointed down range during uncasing, handling, loading, firing, unloading, and re-casing.
  8. The rifle must be pointed at the impact berm when the bolt is closed.
  9. Removable magazines and sleds must be removed from rifles except during prep and live fire.
  10. An ECI must be inserted in the rifle at all times while the rifle is on the range except during prep or live fire.
  11. An ECI must be inserted at the completion of firing before the rifle is removed from the firing line or put in a case.
  12. Rifles are not allowed on the firing line unless the pits are sealed, Except by direction of the Match Director.
  13. After the command “move your equipment to the firing line” has been given, you may handle your rifle. The ECI must remain in the rifle and magazines or sleds cannot be inserted until the start of prep time.
  14. There should never be an uncased rifle without an ECI. It is the responsibility of the competitor and the scorekeeper to make sure the ECI is inserted at the end of firing.
  15. In the event your E Target is disabled, you may be directed to move to a different firing point or to shift fire to an adjacent target. In either case, 2 sighters and additional time will be allowed.
  16. If you plan on making repairs or adjustments to your rifle or equipment, you must first remove the rifle from the line with the ECI inserted before proceeding. Be respectful of the other competitors around you.
  17. For all matches, you must be on target within 3 rounds. There is a 100-yard target on the left where you can verify your zero. If your 2nd round is not on target, zero at the 100-yard target before you take your 3rd shot on target. A miss will send you home. Extra time will not be granted in order to zero your rifle.
  18. Shooters are assumed to know the rules. Ignorance of them is not an excuse.

2 Gun is a shooting competition that tests participants' proficiency with Rifle and Pistol. Engage in a series of new dynamic shooting scenarios every month, where you can test and improve your proficiency, speed, and accuracy, and learn from others.

Participants will be awarded points for their placement in each match. There are 6 regular season matches to qualify for the final match in October. The sum of your score for your highest 3 matches will determine your season points. The top 32 shooters will be invited to the spectator-friendly, elimination-style event to determine the season winner.

Match Dates:

Matches are typically held on the first Sunday of the month.

Registration opens 2 weeks before the match at noon CST.

In 2025 matches will run from April through October:

  • April 6
  • May 4
  • June 1
  • July 6
  • August 3
  • September 7
  • October 12 (Championship Match) 

How to Participate:

  • Gear Up: Read the rules to ensure you have the required firearms, holster, and safety gear for the event.
  • Help Setup and Attend the Safety Briefing: Participants should show up early to help set up stages and must attend a mandatory safety briefing before the event begins.
  • Ask questions: Email the match director beforehand or ask Range Officers and other participants at the match.

What to Expect:

New and Less Experienced Shooters: 

  • If you are new to this type of event, tell your RO so that they don’t make you go first and so that they know you may need some extra instruction or feedback during the day.
  • We have shooters with the full spectrum of experience, please go at your own pace.

 

Spectators:

  • New participants might find matches overwhelming, so we welcome spectators if you want to just watch for your first match.
  • Participants can also bring guests.
  • If you're not registered and wish to spectate, please email the match director for details.

Safety First:

  • Safety Briefing: Mandatory for all participants, held 15 minutes before the scheduled event start time.
  • Everyone is a Safety Officer: Report any safety concerns loudly and immediately.
  • Cold Range: Throughout the event, the east side of the range will be treated as a cold range. This means that all firearms must remain unloaded unless under the direct supervision of an RO.
  • Chamber Flag: Rifles must use a chamber flag when not in use. If you do not have one, they are available in the vending machines of the west side building.
  • Wear Protection: Eye and ear protection are mandatory after the safety briefing, even for spectators.

Preparation:

  • Prepare for muddy, rainy, cold/hot, or windy conditions.
  • Competition can last up to 6 hours; bring extra layers, socks, water, and snacks.

Range Etiquette:

  • Respect: Show respect to competitors, range officers, and spectators.
  • Help our Staff: This event is run entirely by volunteers. Please show up early to help setup and stay late to clean up and return the props to their storage areas.
  • Collecting Brass: Please help clean by collecting brass, but only after the match cleanup concludes.

Disqualification:

  • Participants can be disqualified for:
    • Any unsafe or improper behavior as determined by a Range Officer.
    • Violating the 180-degree plane with the muzzle.
    • Disregarding range commands.
    • Unsafe firearm handling.
    • Shooting the ‘pistol only’ steel targets with your rifle.
    • Losing control of your firearm.

RULES:

  • You are expected to use the same rifle and pistol for the match. If you have a mechanical failure, you can use a backup or get an RO’s approval to bring your firearm to a safe table for inspection and repair.
  • Firearms:
    • Modifications: No limits on modifications.
    • Magazines: No limits on modifications.
    • You may not modify your firearms during the match.
      • Exceptions: QD magnifiers, bipods, and/or slings.
  • Holsters:
    • Must use a mostly enclosed, duty-style holster. AKA: no “race” holsters.
    • Active retention is recommended.
    • Friction-fit holsters shall take at least 5 pounds of force to draw the pistol from the holster.
    • Holster hardware shall be properly torqued with a threadlocker.
    • Drop-leg holsters are allowed. Must connect to the belt and secure firmly to the leg.
    • You are responsible for the condition of your holster, if your pistol falls out of the holster at any time during the match, it is a match DQ
  • Transitioning Firearms:
    • A shooter may only grip one firearm at a time. A firearm must be completely released before the shooter may grab another.
    • When transitioning firearms shooters can either use a dump barrel/box or reholster
      • If you choose to reholster you must show clear, hammer down, then reholster under RO supervision.
    • When putting firearms into a dump box, they must remain in a “safe condition”:
      • There are two acceptable “safe conditions” when dumping firearms:
        The firearm is unloaded with the bolt or slide locked back.
        The firearm safety is engaged.
      • If there is a manual safety, it must be engaged to be considered safe
      • Failure to do so shall result in a match DQ
    • Ammunition:
      • We recommend bringing at least 150 rounds of both pistol and rifle ammo.
      • Power Factor: No specific requirements; participants can use their preferred ammunition.
      • No steel core or penetrating ammo on steel targets (ex: M855/SS109).
      • No tracer ammunition.

SCORING:

  • Time Plus Points Scoring: Time Plus Points assigns a point value to the winner of each stage and proportionally awards points to other shooters by comparing their time to the best shooter in that stage. Whoever has the most points combined over 4 stages wins the match.
    • Stages 1-3 are worth 100 points each. Stage 4 is worth 120 points.
  • Time Limits: Stages may have a specified time limit (par time) within which the participant must complete the course of fire.

 

Penalties

  • Fault Line and Stage Brief Violations
    • Every shot taken in violation incurs a 5-second penalty
    • An RO should not inform shooters that they are violating fault lines unless they step with both feet out of the shooting area
    • Violating stage brief example: A target is required to be neutralized by engaging through a specific port, holding the firearm with only one hand, etc, but is not
  • Stage Briefs take precedent
    • If there is a conflict between these rules and the stage brief, the stage brief rules override these.
  • Keyholed Shots
    Shots that impact the target that are keyholed, aka they hit something else first, deflected, then engaged the target, do not count.
  • Acts of Nature
    If an act of nature, like wind, causes a target to fall and no longer be shootable, the run should be halted and fixed so the shooter can reshoot the stage as intended.
  • Steel Targets
    If a participant hits a falling steel target twice and it doesn’t fall, it is still counted as neutralized
  • Beginning a Stage with Pistol
    Shooters should keep their wrists below the belt, ensuring they don't unfairly contact the pistol grip with their hand.

Other

  • Rifle round count will be be unique to each stage brief
  • Pistol round count is unlimited. Stage design will force mandatory reloads.

Paper Targets

There are two variables listed in the stage brief that affect paper target scoring:

  • Shot Placement Penalties:
    • ‘Down 1’/Charlie - Each Charlie incurs a .5 second penalty
    • ‘Down 3’/Delta - Each Delta incurs a 2 second penalty
  • Miss
    • Each miss incurs a 5 second penalty
    • Exception: Each miss on rifle steel incurs an 8 second penalty
  • Hit-No-Shoot
    • Each hit on a no-shoot target incurs a 5 second penalty
  • Note:
    • There are no FTN or FTE penalties

Rifle headshots count as regular hits, each target requires two shots to neutralize unless otherwise directed by stage design.

Paper Targets:

Steel Targets:

  • Steel is scored as directed by stage design.
  • Pistol steel is painted blue, Rifle steel is painted white.
  • Steel hits will be called with an audible “hit” by your RO.
  • Shooting pistol steel with a rifle is a match DQ

Other Gear:

  • Magazine Retention: We recommend having something specifically designed to retain rifle and pistol magazines like magazine pouches on your belt and/or a chest rig. Magazines must be secured and not held in hand at the start of a stage.
  • Ballistic Armor and Helmets: Ballistic armor and helmets must properly fit
  • Knee and Elbow Pads: Knee and elbow pads that properly fit may be worn.
  • Gear or PPE not otherwise listed: Contact match director for guidance.

The PRS Rimfire Series is both a regional and club-level series formed by Rimfire MD’s, shooters, and our partners.

By incorporating the visions of the PRS shooters, match directors, and sponsors we strive to achieve competitive excellence in the PRS Rimfire Series and cultivate opportunities for shooters at every level. Precision rimfire is an affordable way for people to enjoy competitive shooting. The PRS is committed to its development, potential, and evolution.

In keeping with PRS tradition and the outlaw nature of our sport, each PRS rimfire match will be run differently, focus on different fundamentals, and include a vast number of stressors, no two PRS matches are the same! This provides for regional variances that are unique and very challenging.

PRS MD’s will always have the freedom to plan and execute courses of fire they feel best captures the core principles of PRS rimfire competitions.

The PRS will not dictate to MD’s how they run their COF’s. The PRS believes that the competitors should make the determination of the quality of a match and should provide appropriate feedback to the MD as well as the PRS when necessary.

Typical COF:
The course of fire will be 7-10 stages. 70-120+ rounds of 22LR engaging steel targets from 25 to 400 yards. There is a good mix between prone, barricade and positional stages. Steel targets sized from 1/4" to 8" depending on the stage description.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE FOR SHOOTERS (Benefits & Overview)

Join in the PRS Points Race and shoot your local PRS Rimfire matches!

All shooter scores will be tracked at the club level, regardless of PRS membership as part of the Club’s benefits.

PRS points for the PRS Rimfire Regional Season Standings are attained by becoming a Rimfire Series Member and shooting PRS Rimfire Matches. $30 annually and $20 for Junior Shooters.

All PRS Rimfire members will receive a Rimfire Shooter Profile where your ranking and scores are tracked, you can upload a photo, list your equipment, talk about yourself, and highlight your achievements each season.

Rimfire Members have access to many PRS Sponsor Discounts and
Special Promotions – you can pay for your membership with one discount.

Members are eligible to attend Regional and National finals according to rank in the standings.

Compete in either the Open or Production Division.
Plus, Open Division shooters can compete in 4 additional competitor categories: Ladies, Juniors, Seniors, and Mil/Le. (Same basic format as PRS Regional Series)

Top Shooters in each region standings (there are 6) will be invited to your Regional Finale.

Top Shooters in the standings after each Region’s Finale will be invited to the annual National PRS Rimfire Championship.
