Patrolling 1 – Student Gear List
All weapons will remain unloaded for the entire course.
No ammunition of any type is allowed on site.
(This includes live rounds, dummy rounds, blanks, snap caps, etc.) Safety Notice
- Students will undergo weapons and gear checks at start-of-day and post-chow.
- Instructors maintain final authority to remove any gear that is unsafe or compromises training.
- Muzzle discipline and sling discipline are enforced at all times.
Required Individual Gear (Students Must Bring)
Weapons & Related
- Primary weapon (unloaded)
- AR platform preferred (5.56 or .300blk); NO ammo allowed anywhere on site
- Two-point adjustable sling (required for safe slung movement)
- Weapon safety flag / chamber flag
- Magazine(s)
- All mags must be empty
- Used only for realism (weight, manipulation)
- Weapon cleaning kit (basic)
Field Gear / Load-Bearing
Students must be able to move with hands free and secure their gear.
- Plate carrier (ceramic or training plates allowed; soft armor OK; empty shell OK)
- Chest rig
- LBE / Battle Belt w/ suspenders
Field gear must support:
- 2–4 empty magazines
- Small water bottle or hydration carrier
- Small admin pocket or pouch for notebook & map
- Tourniquet pouch (NO live medical items requiring packaging removal)
Clothing
- Sturdy boots (hiking or duty boots)
- Durable pants (BDU, work pants, or outdoor field pants)
- Long-sleeve shirt or uniform top
- Hat or boonie (recommended for sun and concealment drills)
- Weather-appropriate outer layer (rain, cold, heat considerations)
- Gloves (mechanics or tactical gloves)
Individual Sustainment
- Water (minimum 2 liters) — hydration is mandatory
- Small snack for quick break (bar, nuts, etc.)
- Pen, pencil, notebook
- Red lens or low-output light (for demonstration and night-vision concepts, even if not used)
- Personal protective gear:
- Eye pro
- Ear pro (for environment noise control or if demo shots from instructors occur)
- Sunscreen & insect repellent
Recommended (Improves Training Quality)
These items are not required, but significantly enhance learning and realism.
Navigation / Observation
- Wristwatch
- Lensatic or baseplate compass
- Personal protractor / map tool
- Small binoculars or monocular
- Pace beads (pace counter)
Camouflage / Fieldcraft
- Small roll of burlap, jute, or foliage bands
- Face paint (commercial or camo stick)
- Multi-use shemagh, bandana, or scarf
- Small mirror (for signaling/reflection demonstrations)
Comfort & Utility
- Knee pads
- Small pack or assault pack
- Microfiber towel
- Hand sanitizer
- Small trash bag (keep environment clean)
Instructor-Supplied / Training-Aid Items
These can be provided by the cadre for consistency and safety.
- Dummy training weapons (for demos)
- Safety flags (extras)
- Maps of training area
- Terrain model building materials
- Marking tape for lanes (non-tactical colors avoided during exercises)
- Notional intelligence products (for SALUTE drills)
- Training binoculars / spare compasses
- Camouflage materials (burlap, net, natural foliage staging area)
Prohibited Items (Strict)
- Any live ammunition, regardless of caliber
- Snap caps, dummy rounds, blanks
- Pyrotechnics, flares, smoke
- Fixed blades longer than 5–6" (unless specifically approved)
- Weapon-mounted lights or lasers with Class 3+ capability (eye safety risk)
- Body armor with damaged or delaminating plates
